The Annawadians are optimistic that their lives will improve, but this is all just a guise as once again, the ‘uneven’ land restricts them from doing so. This false hope encompasses events such as the fictitious fundraiser facilitated by Asha; the money that Asha receives is supposed to help children obtain the proper education, but instead, the money is distributed among various ‘other people’ who are supposedly helping out with the schools, leaving Asha some of the money for herself. Virtually, none of the donations are used to improve education, but all of it is used for self-interest. â€Å"Working with community development officials across the city, he found frontmen to receive government funds in the name of educating children. Then he and his collud ers would divvy up the spoils.†(227) This is the kind of false hope the authorities of Annawadi are campaigning towards. On the surface, the goal and purpose of bettering Annawadi may support a good cause, but on the underside, everything is linked to the ulterior motive of maximizing profits. If everything in Annawadi’s society operates this way, there is no opportunity for the slum to advance. Money will never reach the people that need it most; consequently, people will never be able to experience a better lifestyle, always made to think that what the officials of Annawadi are doing is for the benefit of the residents, but in reality, it’s all an illusion in which the advantage is really for the government officials. This false hope contributes to the ‘uneven’ land Annawadians live on by displaying a facade which always leads back to the Annawadians’ expectations and dreams being crushed by misleading promises. Slavery: A Lifelong Escape To say that slavery only affects slaves is inaccurate; it dehumanizes the slaveholders too. Some of the slaveholders were sympathetic, innocent human beings. They were not automatically corrupt just because they owned a slave. Rather, slavery changed their actions and characters from merciful to vicious. In his autobiographical novel, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, Douglass reveals how the act of owning slaves turns many dignified human beings into barbarians. Slavery’s wicked nature turns slaveholders into monsters. Sophia Auld, one of Douglass’ masters, had been ignorant of slavery before she owned slaves, but it did not take long for slavery to degrade her character. A key cause of climate change is the failure of the market system to efficiently allocate resources to deal with extensive negative externalities, specifically those caused by carbon – based gases polluting the atmosphere. Market Failure Economists recognise two main types of market failure – spillovers and public goods (Jackson, McIver, Bajada 2007: 208). These types of market failure are externalities and in some cases result in over allocation of resources. Spillovers occur when some of the benefits or costs associated with the production or consumption of a good ‘spill over’ to third parties; that is, to parties other than the immediate buyer or seller (Jackson, Mciver, Bajada 2007:204). Resources such as coal, oil and natural gas has released large quantities of carbon previously locked in underground rock layers and has increased the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide by a third (34%) since 1750 (Economist 1990). This is an example of a spillover cost where the third parties aren’t compensated for. Resources have been polluting the atmosphere for years but the third parties are unaware of it. Carbon based gases are polluting the atmosphere resulting in climate change. The global warming caused by this greater concentration of carbon in the air is producing an anticipated speed of climate change greater than anything seen for at least 10,000 years (Economist 1990). Spillover costs regarding air pollution effect the third party as everyone requires oxygen to live, as the allocation of resources around the world continues, third parties are affected by the spillover costs. When production or consumption of a commodity inflicts costs on some third party without compensation, these are termed spillover costs. An example of a spillover cost is environmental pollution. When a chemical manufacturer dumps wastes into a lake or river, swimmers, people who fish and sail, and whole communities that want a decent water supply suffer spillover costs. This diagram is an example of market failure, as it demonstrates how spillover coasts affect the allocation of resources. There is an over allocation of resources as more is supplied then what is demanded and the product is allocated. Qe the equilibrium output exceeds Qo the optimum output. The spillover cost is shown as T, which is where the externality of allocating the resource is displayed. Market failure is portrayed through this diagram as the optimum output is higher then the equilibrium resulting with spillover costs. Property rights enable the parties to place a price tag on externality through negotiation, creating opportunities for both sides. The owner of property rights can negotiate with the party causing the negative externality. The owner will seek compensation for the cost of the externality (Jackson, Mciver, Bajada 2007:209). This is another issue regarding over allocating resources, as property is a commonly held resource. The externalities involved with property rights can be good for both sides. Depending on the negotiation the owner can cause negative externality because they have property rights and can decide what to do with the property. The party involved will seek compensation for the externality but this can lead to a reduction in output. So properties are another resource where market failure can occur. Environmental taxation Environmental taxation is when the government taxes items that are effecting the environment to cover the externality cost. The government taxes mostly on carbon based emissions as they are a major contributor to the climate change. Automobiles are a major contribution to effecting the environment. As shown below cars are the highest percentage on impacting the climate. Producers and consumers of automobiles are not required to compensate those affected by the air pollution of the factory, and as a result, they face artificially low prices and produce and consume too many cars (Magill’s Choice 1999:569). This results in the private car market failing as the quantity of cars is too high and if the costs associated with air pollution were included, it would be too much. Due to this private market failing it is now the government’s job to tax automobiles to reflect the real costs involved. This then covers the costs arising from the health risks posed by pollution. Environmental taxes come in many different forms, but as a general matter environmental tax measures either impose a tax cost on some product or activity that is environmentally damaging, or they give a tax benefit to some product or activity that is environmentally beneficial (Macquarie University 2003). This is used in relation to carbon emissions in the atmosphere. It is used in the private car market as there is a tax imposed to cover the environmental damage it creates. The world carbon dioxide emissions (measured tons) are 3. 9 per capita (Jackson, Mciver, Bajada 2007:211). If the environmental taxes were implied it wouldn’t lower the worlds carbon based emissions but it would help prevent market failure. It will potentially be a solution to market failure as there will be no spillover costs. In the past two years, I’ve probably started and stopped reading about 20 books. With each, as goes the one before it, I make it through about a quarter of the novel. Then I bookmark it and put it on my nightstand like I’m totally going to tackle it â€Å"one of these days,† but I know, deep down in my book-neglecting heart, that my lame attempts to try and pick it back up weeks later will result in one page being read, over and over, until I realize I’m hungry. Then, you know, it’s game over. Book goes back on the nightstand. Collects dust. Poor book. (Sometimes-and I put this in parentheses because it’s just so shameful-I even do this to used books†¦books who have already gone through so much. Who does that? It’s like†¦where’s my heart? I don’t know. I just don’t know.) Theoretically, I love books. I love the idea of books, the feel of books. I also think that the â€Å"classic† novels are classic for a reason, and not just because they’re old and wise. In general, I feel like it would be beneficial to read the works of writers who laid the backbone and set the pace for the next great writers. They’re the OGs, you know? You have to learn from the masters and then their students. Now if you hate Jane Austen and Dostoyevsky and are about to say to me sternly â€Å"Yael, don’t you dare put that Hemingway anywhere near me,† be soothed: there are millions of books left out there to read. All kinds and all sizes, from all different kinds of countries and different kinds of people. You have a world of novels to choose from. So choose randomly, haphazardly, and without much forethought. Scratch that, without any forethought. And do it often. (A good analogy is to act like you would if you were at a grocery store in the ice cream aisle, and that for today only, all the ice cream had 0 calories and 0 grams of fat. I mean†¦just go to town. To this end, Doctor Who has featured direct storylines that echo this concern about chemical weapons, as well as our c oncern regarding internment tactics.
